Cheap Christening Decorations

If you're looking to have a christening party on a tight budget, you may think that decorations will be one of the first things to go.

However, you don't have to be mega rich to make a venue look nice and even the simplest (and cheapest) techniques can give your baby's special day that little extra something to make it memorable.

Invitations and Placecards

There are many options available to you when it comes to invitations and not all of them are as expensive as you may think. If you have an artistic side at all you may consider making them yourself. Card is cheap and some great effects can be achieved with just a few decorative items and glue or some glitter and a calligraphy pen. If you don't have time for hand-crafting you could also design the invitations and placecards on a computer and print them out on card. Chances are even if you don't have a printer of your own, you may be able to borrow the use of a friend's printer or even one at your local library for a small fee.

Paper Crafts

So many things can be done with paper and at such low cost that there really is nothing stopping you from sprucing up your chosen venue with some paper craft items. Origami flowers and animals such as the stork are well suited to a christening party and can be mastered with only a little practice. You can also probably find cheap paper table covers that will do the job at your local craft store while you're there. Ribbons (even paper ones) are also a great and cheap christening decoration that can be tied on chair backs and fixtures around the room to add a splash of colour.

Balloons

There are a huge number of different types of balloon available these days and some of them really do look amazing, but even the cheapest balloons can help to create the right atmosphere is chosen and used well. You don't have to spend a fortune on specialist balloons for them to be pretty, simply getting a few different types of cheap balloon and mixing them up in arrangements around the room can add colour and a playful feel to the venue.

Flowers

As with balloons, flowers can be either cheap and cheerful or very expensive depending on which kind you choose and in what quantities. Remember, even the cheaper varieties of flowers can still look classy and elegant if arranged well and just a few flowers on each table as a centrepiece can work wonders.

Know What You Want

The most important thing if you are decorating a christening venue on a shoestring budget is to know what you want in advance. Whether you will be crafting most of your decorations at home or mixing and matching with purchased items, making sure it all follows a colour scheme selected by yourself that works well and don't allow the colours to be determined at random. Otherwise you may find that the venue looks too busy and the colours clash awfully. Another way to bring some cohesion to your cheap christening decorations is to pick out a symbol or motif you like early on (such as cherubs or a stork for example) and try to incorporate it throughout.
